September is Attendance Awareness Month, but school attendance is important all year long! School attendance is essential to academic success, but too often students, parents, and schools don’t realize how quickly absences, excused or unexcused, can add up to academic trouble. Chronic absence— missing just 18 days per school year— can lead to third graders being unable to master reading, sixth graders failing courses, and ninth-graders dropping out of high school. This school year we are challenging our students to Strive for No More than Five absences for the entire school year!

The Tennessee Department of Education and Commissioner Penny Schwinn announced on Monday that the Van Buren County School District has been designated as an Exemplary District. This is the highest designation for a school district and is based on the state accountability determinations for the 2021-22 school year. Congratulations to the faculty, staff, and students at Spencer Elementary and Van Buren County High School and to the administrators of the Van Buren County School District on this high honor! We would also like to thank the parents and community partners who support and contribute to the education of our students! Thank you!

Middle school baseball tryouts will be this Thursday, September 15, 2022 at the high school baseball field from 3:00-4:30. Tryouts are open to any boy in grades 6th-8th. Please bring a glove and come properly dressed.

This school year we are challenging our students to Strive for No More than Five absences for the entire school year! Perfect attendance may seem impossible, but no more than five absences is achievable for most students! However, they can't do it alone! Students need someone at home supporting and encouraging them to be at school everyday and on time.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND BREAK - This is a reminder that Van Buren County Schools will be CLOSED tomorrow, Friday, September 2nd and Monday, September 5th for the Labor Day Break.

StopIt Safety Reporting App -
Van Buren County Schools has partnered with TN Risk Management to provide our students and community with an easy way to report incidents of school and student safety to administration and staff.
StopIt is an app and web based safety reporting program. Reporters remain completely anonymous.
You can find the app in the app store or by visiting https://appweb.stopitsolutions.com/login and searching for "Van Buren County Schools - Spencer, TN"
Please explain to your students that this app is only to be used for legitimate safety concerns. False reports waste valuable time and resources and undermine the purpose behind the program.
It is our desire that this program adds another layer of safety and security to our school system and helps us to mitigate problems and concerns.
Thank you for your help in making our schools safer!

If you have misplaced your child's form, please call Kelly Lewis at (931) 946-7371.
